Nasal fractures, commonly known as broken noses, are breaks or cracks in the bone in the nose. They are caused by contact with a fixed object, contact sports, or motor vehicle accidents. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and bleeding from the nose.

Treatment:

Minor fractures may not require medical attention and will heal on their own. Larger breaks may require manual realignment by a doctor. This procedure is performed with injected anesthesia. A nasal speculum is inserted into the nostrils and the doctor uses special instruments to put the broken nose and cartilage back into place. Internal and external splints are then attached to help keep the nose in place while the bone heals. Severe breaks may require surgery.

If you think you may have a broken nose, it is important to see a doctor right away.
