Non-allergic rhinitis is a condition that causes cold-like symptoms without the presence of an allergy. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including viruses, bacteria, airborne irritants, foods and beverages, stress, hormonal changes, and certain medications.
Symptoms:
Symptoms of non-allergic rhinitis include runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and postnasal drip. Unlike hay fever, non-allergic rhinitis does not cause itchy eyes, nose, or throat.
Treatment:
Treatment for non-allergic rhinitis depends on the severity of symptoms. Mild cases may respond to home remedies such as nasal irrigation, a humidifier, and drinking plenty of fluids. More severe cases may require over-the-counter or prescription medications, such as antihistamines, decongestants, and saline and corticosteroid nasal sprays. Surgery may be necessary for nasal polyps, a deviated septum, or other physical abnormalities.
Additional tips:
- Avoid triggers, such as dust, smoke, perfume, and hot or spicy foods.
- Get plenty of rest.
- Elevate your head when sleeping to reduce drainage.
- Drink plenty of fluids to thin mucus.
- Take a hot shower or bath to help relieve congestion.
- Use a saline nasal spray to moisturize the nasal passages and flush out irritants.
If you have non-allergic rhinitis that is severe or does not respond to home treatment, see a doctor.
